FilePad

Intro/Background

An elegant Bonjour based file sharing solution. Why we need it!

Because it's still a pain in the ass to just move files from one mac/windows

machine to another. I am currently resorting to sending a 6Mb file via GMail

to someone sat behind me! GMail just blew me out so even this didn't work.

Cmon guys we can do better.

Current Solutions (and why they don't work)

Public folders

I just want to send the file to someone, I don't want to ask them to turn sharing on, explain to them what there public folder is, then go tell them it's there, painful!

Email

Cmon it's just lame, the guy I want to send it to is sat behind me. And I don't want to launch Mail, compose email, attach file, find out the guys email address and then send. Plus in a webmail situation 6Meg doesn't work too well.

IM (iChat)

Closest to what I want but nowhere near perfect. I leave iChat off because I'm working and don't want to chat with people. When I want to talk with people socially I'll use iChat but when Im busy I don't want to use iChat. So if I use it then inadvertently I end up having to have chats with 3 or 4 people, annoying! Ok so there is the option to use bonjour only in a work environment but the guy behind me wont use iChat and doesn't want to launch it and go through the setup just to recieve a file and why should he!

So what is Filepad.app then?

• A cross between iChat and iTunes sharing

• Notifications of incoming files ala iChat.

• No messaging, it's files only. No need to have to have a conversation.

• A daemon, no visible app and alway running.

• Autodiscovery over bonjour of available users mac or pc.

Tip for getting started

Look at the "Picture Sharing" and "Picture Sharing Browser" sample code available in Apple's examples, which might be a good starting point for this app.
